Ward Christmas Party?

I am the activities chair for my ward and this year we have a very small budget to work with for the Christmas party. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to serve, what sort of theme, etc.
I really wanted to do a breakfast (because it was cheaper) but we could not get the church for a Saturday. Is it cool to do breakfast for dinner? I was thinking of a waffle bar with some other stuff.
For a theme I was possibly thinking of A Storybook Christmas. Decorating tables with different Christmas stories, that sort of thing. But I have no clue what else to do.
Please if anyone has any suggestions please let me know, I have to make some decisions soon. Thanks.

You are so good at this stuff I'm sure you'll get some great ideas. If I think of something I'll send you an e mail.

I wish that I had some suggestions to offer, but I don't. I think what you're planning is fine. Everybody loves waffles. Do it. Add some hot cocoa and you're good to go.

I'm thinking of sugaring apples or grapes for this wedding's table, and maybe you could use that idea for the Christmas party. You could have people bring over fruit they have (like we always buy a case of oranges in winter), sugar it using syrup instead of merengue so it will wash off, and return it afterwards. Or maybe I could donate a case of apples and oranges to use and return. I've got yards of that red berry garland to go with it. No pressure though OK? Just a cheap idea.

Our ward let families volunteer to decorate a table with a theme. You can assign themes or just let people do what they want. It is $0 and 0 prep on your part and the themes can be pretty fun to look at. I brought our mini train and ran it around a mini tree in the center of the table. People walked around looking at all the tables - kind of like the DC Temple and the different Christmas Trees that all the stakes decorate.

I LOVE the waffle idea. I just bought a waffle iron from Williams and Sonoma and I have only used it once because of that darn diet that I'm doing.
And it's a great idea to let people volunteer to decorate a table.
What is the date?

I was excited to get your comment and look at your blog. It's fun to find old friends and see what they are up to. you and kevin look the same, but i don't even recognize your boys!! And you have one more that I never met and one on the way!! Wow, how fast things can change. You look great and it was fun to see your pics. Your family is adorable!! :)

I really don't know how I missed that on your post, I need to read that one carefully. I am so excited and can't wait to find out what you are having. Sorry your not feeling so well that first part is hard and not fun.
Yes we need to get together.

I was going to say the story books sound great, but having people decorate a table is really fun too (and easier). You can see if some people want to use their own nice dishes and match that with their theme. Waffles are great. Is it for just adults or the whole family? In our last ward, they alternated every other year, so it was fun sometimes to do something just as couples in the ward--then you can have dancing afterwards (we love that part)!
